Russia's Largest Lender to Launch Crypto Wallet After New Digital Asset Law

Russia is preparing for another major cryptocurrency development as Sberbank prepares to bring digital assets into its everyday banking apps. Thanks to new legislation, banks will soon have a legal path to offer crypto services, making digital currencies easier for millions of customers to access.

Sberbank, the country’s largest lender, plans to launch a cryptocurrency wallet and digital depository by December after the “On Digital Currency and Digital Rights” law takes effect on Sept. 1. First Deputy Chairman Kirill Tsarev said the new services will be integrated into Sberbank Online and SberInvestments instead of being offered through a separate application.

Russia clears path for crypto

Instead of asking customers to download another app, Sberbank will place crypto services inside platforms they already use for bank transfers, investments, and bill payments. As a result, approved digital assets could become much easier to manage through a familiar banking experience. That change may remove one of the biggest hurdles that has slowed wider crypto adoption across Russia.

Meanwhile, the rollout depends on Russia’s new digital currency law, which creates a licensing framework for cryptocurrency trading, custody, digital-to-fiat exchange, and cross-border settlements.

Under the rules, non-qualified investors can trade digital assets through testing requirements with an annual limit of about 300,000 rubles, or roughly $3,800. Financial firms must also join the official registry by July 1, 2027. Investors may also want to review risk management strategies before entering this developing market.

Key wallet details remain unknown

Several important details have yet to be confirmed. Sberbank has not announced which cryptocurrencies the wallet will support or whether customers will be able to buy digital assets directly with Russian rubles. Questions also remain about future support for services such as crypto debit cards, although the bank has not mentioned any plans.

Likewise, the bank has not explained how custody will work or whether customers will control their own private keys. Those choices could shape how attractive the platform becomes for both newcomers and experienced investors. Anyone entering the market should also consider risk management strategies, especially while operational details continue to emerge.

Beyond the wallet, Sberbank plans to introduce a digital depository for storing and managing digital assets. Bank-operated custody services typically provide stronger security, identity verification, and regulatory oversight than self-managed wallets. They can also reduce the chance of permanently losing funds because of misplaced private keys.

Russia’s evolving crypto framework

Russia’s latest announcement reflects how the country’s cryptocurrency policy has changed over the past several years. Back in early 2022, the Bank of Russia called for a broad ban on cryptocurrency trading, mining, and use, arguing that digital assets posed risks to financial stability.

Government officials eventually chose a different approach by building a regulatory framework that permits licensed crypto activities while continuing to prohibit cryptocurrencies as a payment method inside the country.

Following international sanctions after the country’s invasion of Ukraine, interest in alternative financial infrastructure also increased. Authorities have since legalized cryptocurrency mining, introduced an experimental framework for cross-border settlements, and allowed the central bank to approve selected firms for international transactions.

Traditional banks embrace crypto

Elsewhere, the Moscow Exchange has expanded into crypto-linked products through cash-settled futures contracts, while VTB and T-Bank are preparing their own digital depositories under the new legislation.

Although several operational details remain unknown, Sberbank’s planned launch marks another important step toward bringing cryptocurrencies into Russia’s regulated banking system. With tens of millions of customers already using its digital platforms, the bank could play a major role in expanding mainstream access to digital assets once the new law comes into force.
